This is what I think.

Dolls made in Germany between 1986 - 1993/4 (maybe Hungary also 1993/4.) have artist marks behind there right ear. It kind of looks like # with a letter over it. Sometime in the mid 90s, around 1994/5 Pleasant Company started making the dolls in China, these dolls don't have the artist mark.

First issue dolls, Addy, Lindsey, Kit, Kailey, Nellie, Elizabeth (may be others dolls but I don't know for sure) have a set of numbers under the Pleasant Company on the back of their necks. Some Josefina have a #1 next to Pleasant Company. This may be the first Josefina Mattel made or the first Josefina Pleasant Company made. Don't know for sure. (Have not looked at Marisol or Jess neck yet to see if they have the numbers.)
